After Porter’s Rejection of Top Rank’s Offer, Rumored Pacquiao-Crawford Showdown Gets A Boost
The rumored showdown between welterweight champion Terence Crawford (37-0, 28) and 8-division champion Manny Pacquiao gets a boost following Porter’s rejection of Top Rank’s initial offer to him as a worthy challenger to World Boxing Organization’s current welterweight title holder Crawford.
Pacquiao has expressed his desire to face Crawford inside the ring in his next fight, while undefeated Nebraska native Crawford is also expressing the same. Rumors that the two will have a boxing showdown began last year, and it was Crawford’s promoter Bob Arum who hinted that the two will fight before the end of 2020 in Bahrain. But the coronavirus pandemic has changed everything and no big boxing fights were taking place.
But there is another hurdle to overcome in order for the Pacquiao-Crawford fight to happen. And it is the price of 40 million dollars that Pacquiao asks to face Crawford, while Crawford will have to settle for 10 million dollars. Top Rank initially offered Porter 2 million dollars to take on Crawford, but Porter rejected the offer saying the offer was degrading.
“I understand the business of boxing right now, and even starting negotiations for 2 million dollar is an insult, and everyone in the sport of boxing knows that the welterweight division is the most popular division in boxing,” Porter said in a interview. Porter, who is 33-3-1 with 17 knockouts (losses come from Errol Spence Jr, Keith Thurman and Kell Brook), is Pacquiao’s former sparring partner.
But as for Crawford, he prefers to face Pacquiao over Porter. “Yeah I prefer the Manny Pacquiao fight over Shawn Porter,” said Crawford in an interview with fightsports.tv. “But Shawn Porter is a great fight in its own right and I am going to be ready for whichever one comes to fruition”.
Arum has to secure at least 50 million dollars for this fight to happen, which would likely take place in the Middle East, and if that’s the case, then Crawford will receive the highest salary of his boxing career. And if Crawford is able to beat Pacquiao, 42, it would cement his status as one of the bests of all time and pave the way for even more lucrative fights down the road.
At this time, even with no clear opponents yet, Pacquiao has started training with Freddie Roach at the Wild Card gym in California. It remains to be seen whether he will face Spence Jr., Ryan Garcia, Mikey Garcia, or Crawford.
