Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” Remains In the Top 1 On the Hot 100 for A Second Week, While Ariana Grande’s “34+35” Hits No.2

The 17-year-old Filipino-American actress and singer, Olivia Rodrigo, despite being so young, has already had great success in the music industry. Rodrigo’s song, “Drivers License”, which was released on January 8 under Geffen/Interscope Records, holds its beat for a second week now at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, after climbing to the top of the chart a week ago.

Meanwhile, Ariana Grande’s “34+35” jumps from No. 11 to No. 2 on the Hot 100, breaking the record for its previous No. 8 peak after the release of its remix with Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion. Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion are receiving chart credit for the song for the first time. In particular, “34+35” is reaching the highest Hot 100 on the charts by a trio of female soloists in almost 20 years.

“Drivers License” is Rodrigo’s first single, and based on how it turned out to be so successful, she will only get bigger. In fact, her song continues to break records around the world. Now it has reached another milestone, “Drivers License” is considered the fastest song ever to reach 200 million Spotify streams in just 17 days from its release.

Technically, however, “Drivers License” is not Rodrigo’s first song to reach 200 million views on Spotify. Her other song, “All I Want,” which appeared on her Disney + High School Musical: The Musical: The Series show, also hit 200 million views on January 21.

“I had no expectations,” Rodrigo said in an interview with Vogue when asked about her expectations for the song “Drivers License”. “I’ve always loved the song; It really captures the emotions of heartbreak–all the heartache, sadness, and insecurity that accompany a breakup. I always felt great about it, but I definitely didn’t expect it to chart the way it has and break all these records. It is surreal.”

The song is rumored to be about Rodrigo’s personal experience of breaking up with his ex-boyfriend and co-star Joshua Basset, who just released a single titled “Lie, Lie, Lie.” “I completely understand why people are curious about the details of the song,” Rodrigo said when asked about her reaction to all these rumors. “But for me, who and what the song is about is not important.”

“People are resonating with the song because it is so honest, raw and emotional. I was talking to my therapist just before this interview and she said, ‘I listen to this song. I am a grown woman and I am your therapist, but I can relate to everything that you are going through.’ It has been crazy to see the genuine reactions of people, no matter what situation they are in.”

Rodrigo has yet to set foot on Philippine soil, but she is certainly proud of her roots. Rodrigo is of Filipino descent on her father’s side, while her mother is of German and Irish descent. “I ‘m Olivia Rodrigo, I’m a Filipina,” she once declared. “And I’m a Lumpia (crispy Filipino spring rolls) fan.”
