US presidential candidate Joe Biden and his wife Jill tested negative for COVID-19 on Friday, following President Trump’s announcement that he and first lady Melania tested positive for coronavirus. It was Biden’s primary care physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, who confirmed in a statement that the couple tested negative for the coronavirus. “Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden underwent PCR testing for COVID-19 today and COVID-19 was not detected,” the statement said.

After his test result was confirmed, Biden took to Twitter to announce it. “I’m happy to announce that Jill and I have tested negative for COVID. Thank you to everyone for your messages of concern. I hope this serves as a reminder: wear a mask, keep social distance, and wash your hands,” said Biden in a tweet on Friday.

Biden, 77, is considered to be at high risk of contracting the virus. Last Tuesday night, both Biden and Trump met on stage for a debate that lasted almost two hours. Although neither of them wore masks throughout the debate session, their podiums were more than two meters apart and they never came close to interact.

Meanwhile, President Trump, who is in quarantine in the White House alongside his wife Melania, has shown minor symptoms of the virus and will continue to function and do his duty as usual. On Friday morning, Biden and his running mate, vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris, took the time to send their well wishes to the president and first lady. “Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family,” said Biden in a tweet.

“Doug and I join Joe Biden and Dr. Biden in wishing President Trump and the First Lady a full and speedy recovery. We’re keeping them and the entire Trump family in our thoughts,” said Harris in a tweet.

Trump’s positive coronavirus test result has prompted Joe Biden to say that what happened should serve as an invigorating reminder of the severity of the pandemic. “We have to take this virus seriously. It’s not going away automatically. We have to do our part to be responsible. It means following the science, listening to the experts, washing our hands, social distancing. It means wearing a mask in public. It means encouraging others to do so as well.”
