The Prayer of St. Francis of Asisi Expresses, Simply and Beautifully, A Way of Life for All Times
St. Francis is one of the best loved of all saints. Founder of the Franciscan order, poverty was one of his principles in life. He is also known as Il Poverello, the Poor One. He is famed for his love of all living things, and everyone knows the story of his preaching to the birds of the forest.
Even though the prayer below was written several hundred years ago, it expresses, simply and beautifully, a way of life for all times. It points out forgetfulness of self and generosity towards one’s fellow men. Try this point of view and you will be surprised to find out how much good it will do to you. Read to get the message of St. Francis:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
