Tszyu May Fight Teixeira Next In A Title Bout In Australia

Brazilian pugilist and reigning WBO super welterweight champion Patrick Teixeira.

Fresh off his win against Australian boxer Jeff Horn, Tim Tszyu (16-0, 12 KO) can face Patrick Teixeira (31-1, 22 KO) in his next title fight. Discussions were taking place, and if such negotiation is successful, the title fight may take place in Australia by the end of the year.

Teixeira is the current WBO super welterweight champion and is required to face Argentine Brian Castaño in a fight scheduled for April 25 of this year, but it was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Tszyu is ranked No. 2 in the WBO, and Tszyu’s promoter Matt Rose is looking for a way to allow reigning WBO champion Teixeira a voluntary defense against the No. 2 ranked Tszyu.

In an interview with Fox Sports, Matt Rose explained why this fight has to happen: “All parties are very interested in making this fight happen–Teixeira’s promoters (Golden Boy Promotions) want to see him back in the ring defending his belt as soon as possible and the WBO is obviously in the business of keeping their champions active.”

As negotiations are still ongoing, there’s already a lot of interest from various Australian venues to host the match, which will presumably also feature a live audience. “There’s a few hurdles to get over but it’s looking good and it could all happen very quickly, plus it helps that the world just saw a big crowd at our event in Townsville,” added Rose.

Castanos’ longtime manager Sebastian Contursi told BoxingScene that “we were very surprised to learn from BoxingScene that Tim Tszyu’s promoter was trying to fix a fight between Tszyu and Texeira by requesting to the WBO. Last December, the WBO appointed Castano as the mandatory challenger and he still is. In fact, contracts have been signed for Castaño to face Texeira last April 25 in Indio, California, a fight that was officially announced by Golden Boy and then postponed because of the pandemic.”

Castaño was trapped in his hometown in Argentina and with the pandemic still ongoing, a showdown with Teixeira may not be possible this year. Covid-19 restrictions would be the main reason why some fights are canceled. But Rose says it probably won’t be the case if the fight takes place in Australia. “Australia is a very enticing prospect for everybody involved as unlike the US, Brazil or Argentina we can have crowds at boxing events right now and the restrictions on crowd numbers are being eased,” said Rose.
